Minty Cocoa Body Butter Recipe

Create a Peppermint and Cocoa Body Butter for the Holidays

The holidays are the perfect time to indulge in self-care with rich, nourishing body butter that not only hydrates your skin but also fills your home with festive scents. Our handcrafted peppermint and cocoa body butter brings together the moisturizing powers of grassfed tallow and cocoa butter with the refreshing aroma of peppermint and spearmint, plus a warm hint of vanilla. Here’s how to make this luscious treat for your skin.

Why Grassfed Tallow and Cocoa Butter?

Grassfed tallow is a natural fat sourced from pasture-raised animals, rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, which help protect and repair skin. Cocoa butter, a beloved ingredient in skincare, adds deep hydration and a velvety texture. Cocoa butter gives off that delicious chocolate smell that pairs so well with the vanilla and mint essential oils. Feel free to omit the cocoa butter and swap it for shea butter or mango butter. Together, these two create a body butter that melts into your skin, locking in moisture during cold, dry winter months.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz grassfed tallow

  • 8 oz cocoa butter (shea butter or mango butter if you don’t desire a chocolatey scent)

  • 1/2 cup carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond, or avocado oil)

  • 15–30 drops peppermint essential oil

  • 15–30 drops vanilla essential oil (vanilla planifolia)

  • 10–15 drops spearmint essential oil

Tip: Adjust essential oil drops to suit your scent preference — start with less and add more if desired.

Equipment Needed

  • Double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan of simmering water

  • Mixing bowl

  • Hand mixer or whisk

  • Clean, airtight containers for storing body butter (glass jars work beautifully)

Instructions

  1. Melt the Butters and Tallow
Combine the grassfed tallow and cocoa butter in your double boiler. Heat gently until both are fully melted, stirring occasionally.

  2. Add Carrier Oil
Remove from heat and stir in the carrier oil. This helps improve spreadability and adds extra nourishment.

  3. Cool Slightly, Then Add Essential Oils
Let the mixture cool for a few minutes but not so much that it starts to solidify. Add the peppermint, vanilla, and spearmint essential oils, stirring well to distribute the fragrance evenly.

  4. Whip the Body Butter
Place the bowl in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes or until the edges start to firm up but the mixture is not completely solid. Use your hand mixer to whip the body butter until it’s light and fluffy.

  5. Package and Store
Transfer your whipped body butter to clean jars. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. It should last for several months.

How to Use

Apply a small amount to dry areas—like hands, elbows, knees, and feet—especially after a shower or before bed. The peppermint and spearmint will invigorate, while the cocoa butter provides deep, lasting hydration.

Perfect for Gifts or Personal Pampering

This peppermint and cocoa body butter makes a thoughtful holiday gift that’s easy to personalize. Add a festive ribbon or a custom label to your jars for a homemade gift that friends and family will love.

Celebrate the season with nourishing, natural skincare you make yourself, and enjoy the cozy, uplifting scent of peppermint and cocoa throughout the holidays.
