Essential Oils That Help Repel Bugs

Essential oils are a natural, fragrant way to help keep bugs at bay. Certain botanicals contain compounds that insects find unpleasant or that interfere with their ability to sense hosts. Below are five effective essential oils—lemon eucalyptus, catnip, cedarwood, ylang ylang, and Nootka tree—and simple ways to use them safely.

Why these oils work

  • Lemon eucalyptus: Contains p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), a proven mosquito repellent. It’s one of the most effective plant-based options for deterring biting insects and ticks.

  • Catnip: Nepetalactone, the active compound in catnip, can repel mosquitoes more effectively than some commercial repellents in head-to-head studies.

  • Cedarwood: Cedarwood oil repels moths, ticks, fleas, and some biting flies; its warm, woody scent masks the chemical cues insects use to locate hosts.

  • Ylang ylang: This floral oil deters mosquitoes and is especially useful in blends, offering both repellent action and a pleasing aroma.

  • Nootka tree: Derived from Pacific Northwest conifers, Nootka has insect-repelling properties similar to cedar and can help repel mosquitoes and biting flies.

You can find these essential oils in our new Natural Bug Spray or have a go at some DIY recipes below.

Simple ways to use them

  • Spray: Combine 10–20 drops total of essential oil per ounce (30 mL) of carrier (witch hazel, vodka, or fractionated coconut oil). Shake before use and spray clothing and exposed skin. Reapply every 2–4 hours or after swimming.

  • Diffuse: Use a diffuser on patios or indoor spaces to create a bug-unfriendly zone. Blend lemon eucalyptus with ylang ylang for balanced effectiveness and aroma.

  • Lotion or oil blend: Add 10–15 drops per ounce of unscented lotion or carrier oil for a moisturizing repellent you can apply to skin. Avoid the eye area.

  • Cloth sachets or drawer liners: Soak cotton balls with cedarwood or Nootka oil and tuck them into drawers, closets, or outdoor seating areas to deter moths, fleas, and other pests.

  • Candle boost: Add a few drops of catnip or lemon eucalyptus to unscented soy candles for an extra repellent effect while enjoying outdoor evenings.

Safety tips

  • Always dilute essential oils—neat application can irritate skin.

  • Do a patch test before widespread use, especially on children or sensitive skin.

  • Pregnant or nursing people and pets may be sensitive to certain oils—check with a healthcare professional before use.

  • Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes and store them out of reach of children.

Using these essential oils thoughtfully gives you a gentle, natural way to reduce bites and make outdoor time more pleasant—while filling your space with beautiful, plant-based scents.
